The overall purpose of the NAM Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine is to enable talented, early-career health science scholars to participate actively in health- and medicine-related work of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) and to further their careers as future leaders in their field. Supported through an endowment from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), and the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF), the program especially welcomes nominations of under-represented minority candidates.

Julieanne P. Sees, DO, FAAOS, FAOAO, FAOA
2020-2022 Osteopathic Medicine Fellow
Julieanne P. Sees, DO, FAAOS, FAOA, FAOAO, is a pediatric neuro-orthopaedic surgeon with dual fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedics and neuro-orthopaedic surgery who has focused care for children and young adults with neuromuscular conditions and chronic brain disease. An active member of the osteopathic medical profession, Dr. Sees serves on the American Osteopathic Association Board of Trustees, the American Osteopathic Foundation Board of Directors, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, as President of the Delaware State Osteopathic Medical Society and Webmaster for the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. She teaches all levels of both osteopathic and allopathic medicine with academic affiliate professorships at the Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine, the Rowan University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Sees has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and made over 180 national and international conference presentations and instructional courses. Her scientific and health-care advocacy research includes best practices within neuro-orthopaedics and developmental disorders, complex motor conditions and gait abnormalities, physician professional development, clinician well-being and emerging leadership in health and medicine. Her commitment to scholarly excellence has earned her multiple awards of her unwavering dedication to research and teaching with unbridled energy and passion including recipient of Emerging Leader of both the American Osteopathic Foundation and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Association, and prestigious designation as Fellow of both the American Orthopedic Association and American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics. Dr. Sees obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry/Religious Studies as a Division I scholarly athlete from the College of the Holy Cross, her medical degree from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed orthopaedic residency at the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Fellowship Description
The NAM Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine will be awarded for a two-year period. During this time, the fellow is expected to continue to work at his/her main academic post, while being assigned to a board of the National Academies. The boards are:
- Children, Youth, and Families,
- Food and Nutrition,
- Global Health,
- Health Care Services,
- Health Sciences Policy, and
- Population Health and Public Health Practice.
The fellowship requires a 10- to 20-percent commitment of time for two years, and includes attendance at a one-week orientation to health policy, the Fall NAM Annual Meeting, and the meetings of the assigned board. Domestic travel expenses are covered for participation in approved fellowship activities. Additionally, the fellow will participate actively in the work of an appropriate expert study committee or roundtable, including contributing to its reports or other products.
This experience will introduce the NAM Fellow in Osteopathic Medicine to a variety of experts and perspectives, including legislators, government officials, industry leaders, executives of voluntary health organizations, scientists, and other health professionals. Each fellow will be assigned to an NAM member who will serve as a senior mentor during the two years of the fellowship.
A flexible research grant of $25,000 will be awarded to each NAM Fellow in Osteopathic Medicine, which will be administered through the appropriate department in the fellow’s home institution. This grant is not intended for use as a salary offset for the fellow.
Eligibility
Nominees for the NAM Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine must meet the following requirements:
- Nomination by a member of the NAM, the Trustees of the AOA, the Board of Deans of the AACOM, or the Board of Directors of the AOF
- Must hold a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine
- Able to dedicate 10 to 20 percent of time to the fellowship for two years
- Within the first two-to-seven years after completion of postgraduate work
- Supporting letter from the candidate’s department chair
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident status at the time of the nomination
Selection Criteria
Preference will be given to nominees who have a demonstrated interest in and focus on Osteopathic Medicine. In addition, an NAM-appointed committee will consider:
- Professional qualifications
- Professional accomplishments as evidenced through publications and research grants
- Quality of letters of recommendation
- Expertise in an area of relevance to the NAM

- Nomination letter from a member of the NAM, the Trustees of the AOA, the Board of Deans of the AACOM, or the Board of Directors of the AOF
- Three (3) letters of reference
- Supporting letter from department chair
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae
- A brief one-page bio
Timeline
Fellowships will be awarded in even years.
