Dr. Thomas Insel, a distinguished neuroscientist, psychiatrist and leader of the mental health team at the life sciences research organization Verily, will receive this year’s Joan and Stanford Alexander Award in Psychiatry from the Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Insel’s career has included research in psychiatry, basic research in behavioral neuroscience, and administration of academic research centers and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He is best known for research on oxytocin and vasopressin, two peptide hormones implicated in complex social behaviors, such as parental care and attachment. He left NIMH in 2015. His current focus is on translation of neuroscience discoveries to the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
The Alexander Award in Psychiatry honors a mental health professional who has made significant contributions in research, education and clinical or community service for people suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The award consists of an annual prize and lecture of international scope. The award was established by Joan and Stanford Alexander, who are pioneer advocates for providing parity in the reimbursement for psychiatric care for the mentally ill and have worked to fight the effects of stigma on those who suffer from mental illness.
Dr. Insel will receive the award on Wednesday, April 19, at 10 a.m. in Baylor College of Medicine’s Cullen Auditorium. The event is open to the public. Read the official press release >>
