Leveraging Behavioral Economics as a Tool for Individual and Population Health

Workshop Date and Time:  December 1, 2021 | 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET

Where: Via webinar

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic exposed faults in the U.S. health care system, there has been a need to align health care resources and practices to foster health, well-being, and equity that is valuable for individuals and populations. In order to achieve this goal, we must transform our current systems of care to routinely and fully incentivize high-value actions by individuals, the health system workforce, and the health system as a whole that support health and well-being.

Drawing upon strategies and insights from the field of behavioral economics, this webinar identified practical approaches that can incentivize high-value best practices for individuals and organizations that promote better individual and population health and well-being.

This work addressed the following motivating questions:

  1. How much is known about the effectiveness of various incentive strategies to promote actions that benefit health and well-being? Have best practices been established for the health workforce?
  2. What is the experience in aligning system-wide incentives to accelerate health transformation, in particular for using behavioral economics to facilitate positive, sustainable change during COVID-19?

This work aligns with the Leadership Consortium’s overall aim of advancing a learning health system by determining how incentive structures can best be transformed for health system efficiency, equity, effectiveness, and continuous learning.
