On October 23, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) released the long-awaited report, Taking Action against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being. The NAM commissioned this consensus study to evaluate the available evidence on clinician burnout and well-being, and make recommendations for change. Over the course of 18 months, a committee of seventeen subject-matter experts gathered evidence, reviewed and deliberated on the evidence, and developed recommendations on designing systems to reduce clinician burnout and foster professional well-being. The resulting report presents a bold vision for redesigning clinical systems – one that focuses on the activities that patients find important to their care and which enables and empowers clinicians to provide high-quality care.

On December 4, 2019, the NAM Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience (Action Collaborative) will host a meeting to elevate the findings, conclusions, and recommendations from the consensus report, and begin to translate the report recommendations to action. The meeting will take place from 8:00am – 5:30pm at the National Academy of Sciences building, located at 2101 Constitution Avenue NW in Washington, DC.

  • The objectives of this public meeting are to:
    • Present the goals, findings, conclusions, and recommendations from the consensus report, Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being
    • Discuss  the conceptual framework and foundational principles underlying the report goals, findings and recommendations
    • Gain an understanding of how the report goals and recommendations apply to participating organizations and stakeholder groups, and learn about specific actions across the system to reduce burnout and foster professional well-being.
    • Identify what health care organizations, educational institutions, policymakers, and the Clinician Well-Being Collaborative can do to advance the consensus report goals, findings and recommendations
    • Make commitments at the individual and institutional level to carry forward the consensus report recommendations
